It's their word Against Mine

it's their word Against Mine

Hair, dated colonial rhetoric, Indigenous Resurgence, 2016

This installation aims to interrupt participation as much as it seeks to encourage it. Being site-specific at Emily Carr University's library, it’s their word Against Mine remains poignant as academic epistemologies have and continue to build representations of indigeneity that discredit the authority and validity of Indigenous histories. Connecting various books available on the First Nations library shelf, I hope students, staff and faculty that pass by will take the time to consider their position within the context of institutionalized knowledge production, and its (often culturally homogenizing) protocols, while also learning of the few Indigenous scholars and creative writers that do permeate this outdated shelf.
